Yesterday, at Book Expo America in Manhattan, I met up with my client and friend, David Meerman Scott. David was there to sign galleys of his new book, “Real-Time Marketing & PR,” which hits bookstores this November.
I asked David for his best blogging tip, and this is what he said:
Wonderful insight – if more folks followed it the Web would be a better and more edu-focused empowering community. I’m glad people are really tuning in to the idea that we can share information, be generous, be a resource without doing “bait and switch – yakkity-yak “back to me” marketing blather.”
The power of blogging lies in being able to have your content accessible and serve as an authentic and FREE resource to your community.
A P.S. to what David says in this video: I spoke with David just before launching my blog, “Seeing Your Story” (www.seeingyourstory.com) and he actually suggested having an “About My Services” page on the blog. In other words, don’t use your blog POSTS to sell your products or services. But if someone wants to find out who you are and what you can offer them, by all means provide that information.
An excellent point, Ron. The different parts of a site have different functions and expectations associated with them.
Great advice. Listen, listen, listen.
Right. How can you know what would most interest your audience without first listening deeply to them?
Thanks, Jared.
It was fun to catch up with you Mark!
David
I appreciate that, David.
It was fun watching that line of people waiting for your autograph. The only line longer than yours was the one I saw for Pele.
